New song 1 - Alley’s spelling out “predator” so I guess that’s pretty dark. This song just reminds me of ‘Babelonia’ if you put it in a minor key, but the driving quality is a little like ‘Chain’ (live, not the studio version). Sadly there’s only a minute and a half of this on YouTube. This band aren’t really one for short songs, so I’m hoping there’s more to it.
New song 2 - This one is gorgeous. The bass, those glassy guitars, and Alley’s voice getting higher and higher — it’s like a heavenly mix of ‘My Cabal’ and ‘Dial’, but the lilting, romantic edge isn’t something we’ve really heard before. Daniel’s bass really comes into its own here too. I think he’s a nice addition to the band. I can’t make out the lyrics, but I think the first line might be “take my love and leave”. Ben’s guitar reminds me of the video he recorded for ‘the Night, the Night’. This could be that, I have no idea.
New song 3 - For some reason Ben’s riff sounds like it could be in a Killers song, and Alley’s voice sounds like Mara Carlyle at times. That pairing in itself is just strange, but it’s nice thinking about the direction this album’s going in. I can see this song as the ‘Heart is Strange’ of their next album; it’s poppy, but not too poppy. Alley’s voice has a sort of 90s sound to it here. I’d try and explain what I mean but I’m not sure myself.
All in all, looks like it was a great gig! Huge thanks to Dean Keim for uploading these videos. :)
